Sidney Hull founded the firm when he took over and incorporated Ashmoles which was established in Ilford in 1864. The history prior to Ashmoles is uncertain, but we still have old property ledgers going back to 1832.
Working originally from first floor offices opposite Ilford Station, property management and rent collections were the mainstay of the business. After World War II Sidney became heavily involved in war damage repairs and went on to develop new buildings in Brentwood, Romford and Ilford. The firm moved into ground floor and first floor offices in Clements Road, off Ilford High Road and Cranbrook Road Gants Hill.
Sir Neil Thorne succeeded Sidney Hull as Principal , in the 1960s and proceeded to expand the practice with household name clients such as Esso. Neil employed a young newly qualified surveyor Richard Irish, who had been working in the late 1960s as a rating surveyor in the West End with Montagu Evans. By the early 70’s Neil had developed his ambitions as a politician , moving from a local councilor to member of the Greater London Council and eventually Member of Parliament for Ilford South. He became a consultant to Hull & Company which role he continued with for many years, and still offers consultancy advice on an informal basis to this day. He was succeeded as Senior Partner by Derek Shaw, a former property manager with Fords and retained consultant Property Manager with British Printing Corporation, whose work he brought into the practice , along with a then assistant trainer surveyor Stephen Barrable.
The firms client base continued to expand and operated throughout the whole country and into Scotland and Wales, offering tailor made consultancy services across the board whilst retaining its core business of property management, survey and valuation work for both individual clients as well as corporates, banks, and all the major lending institutions.
The partnership changed materially in 1986 with Richard Irish and Stephen Barrable taking over all the professional work being carried out from their offices at Ilford and Chelmsford. They brought in to the new partnership Stephen Moll, Stephen Wright and Anthony Mott and expanded with new offices at Romford and Severn Kings. The ravages of the economic slump in the early 1990s took their toll and the firm contracted from five partners with four offices and 30 staff. Today, we are back to our roots in Ilford. Richard Irish retired as senior Partner and Stephen Barrable remains as a Sole Practitioner.
There are many people who we have been proud to have worked with us over the decades and not forgetting our vast array of clients without whom the practice could not continue to enjoy such a varied, colourful and interesting life. Who knows what the next chapter will bring…
